ว. จากคำว่า กนฺตาร ในบาลี ยากที่จะข้าม; ยากที่จะผ่าน

น. ทางที่กันดาร; ดินแดนว่างเปล่า เป็นคำใช้ต่อท้ายคำอื่น เช่นกันดาร 5 คือ 1. โจรกันดาร แดนที่ยากจะผ่านเหตุเพราะมีโจร; 2. วาลกันดาร แดนที่ยากจะผ่าน มีสัตว์ร้าย; 3. นิรุทกกันดาร แดนที่ยากจะผ่าน ไม่มีน้ำ; 4. อมนุสสกันดาร แดนที่ยากจะผ่าน มีอมนุษย์; 5. อัปปภักขกันดาร แดนที่ยากจะผ่านขาดแคลนอาหาร . ยังใช้ต่อกับคำอื่น อาทิ มรุกันดาร แดนกันดาร คือทราย หรือทะลทราย; มรุกันดารมรรค แดนที่ยากจะผ่าน ทิฏฐิคือความเห็นผิด; ป่าดง; อัตคัด
